Waterproofing Your Foundation With An Exterior Membrane

Water can be a destructive force when it comes to the structural integrity of your home. To ensure that water seepage doesn't compromise the strength and security of your home, you should protect the exterior of your foundation walls with a waterproof membrane. These membranes provide protection against a variety of water damage forms.

Here are three types of water damage that you can eliminate by waterproofing with an exterior wall membrane in the future.

1. Water seeping in through porous spots.

Most modern home are built on a foundation made from concrete. As the concrete for the foundation walls is poured, small pockets of air can become trapped in the concrete mix. When the mix hardens, these air pockets create porous spots where water accumulating in the soil outside the foundation walls can be forced into the home's interior.

By applying a waterproof membrane over the entire exterior surface of your home's foundation walls, you can eliminate the potential for water to seep into your basement through porous spots created during the installation of the foundation walls.

2. Water seeping in through mortar cracks.

Older homes typically have foundation walls made from brick. These masonry walls can become damaged over time, allowing water to seep into the home's basement. The natural shifting and movement of the soil surrounding a masonry foundation wall can cause cracks in the mortar holding the brick wall together.

Water that has accumulated in the soil surrounding the foundation is pushed through these cracks, creating further damage. By adding a waterproof membrane to the exterior of a masonry foundation wall, you can eliminate water entry and future deterioration of the mortar.

3. Water seeping over the top edge of the wall.

If your lawn has a negative slope that directs water back toward your home's foundation, then you could experience water seeping over the top edge of your foundation wall. This can result in significant damage to the structural soundness of your home, and should be addressed through the installation of a waterproof membrane to the exterior surface of the foundation's walls.

The waterproof membrane extends up past the top of the foundation wall and onto the exposed concrete surface area of your home's footings. This coverage prevents water from seeping over the edge of the wall and finding its way into your home.
